BREAK FREE FROM HOLDS AND GRIPS WITH SAFETY AND CARE
Your high risk staff may face situations where an attacker will grab their clothing, limbs or hair. They may trap them up against a wall or even apply strangle holds or bear hugs. This is assault.
Such attacks may occur after a period of verbal abuse and threatening behaviour - when de-escalation techniques have not worked. Or they may occur without any notice.
In these situations a violent response is inappropriate and may lead to prosecution. As well as a need to defend themselves, your staff have a duty of care to their attackers. Breakaway techniques allow people to safely break free from holds and grips. Once they have broken free they are then taught to leave the scene as quickly as possible and seek help.
People learning these techniques must be physically able to carry out the movements. WiSE techniques are based on nursing duty of care, non custodial methods. Simple, natural movement is used to control and support an individual’s limbs.
Techniques are applied quickly, simply and safely to minimise the risk of injury while preserving the dignity of all concerned. Special methods are taught for use with children or the elderly.
Training is based on scenarios faced by course participants. These may include breaking up fights and coming to the assistance of a colleague. Courses may also include simple holding techniques to be used while an aggressor calms down or is moved to a chair or to a quiet area.
Staff are assessed during training to determine their ability to use the techniques. Clients may also ask for reports on individual employees attitude to the use of physical interventions - over zealous use can lead to service user injury.
