USE REASONABLE FORCE AS A LAST RESORT

When your staff are physically attacked, they must defend themselves. Training in Breakaway Techniques will enable them to break free from holds and grips and seek help.

At risk staff, will also need to be trained in safely holding or restraining violent people to:

  • Stop them from attacking others
  • Stop them from hurting themselves
  • Stop them from damaging property

Employers need to be aware of the law of assault and the use of reasonable force. Over zealous use of physical interventions can lead to criminal prosecutions.

'Reasonable Force' is not defined but in a court it would be seen as the amount of force required in the particular situation.

Continued use of a holding technique after the attacker has been subdued could be seen as unreasonable

Where it is likely that physical interventions will be used, such as in special schools or bars, service users must be made aware of the policy for their use. They must always be used as a last resort when other defusion techniques have failed. While holds are being applied verbal de-escalation techniques should continue to be applied.
