Staff involved in Conflict at Work must be supported after the event
People verbally and physicallyattacked will suffer post incident stress and trauma. In serious cases this may develop into PTSD
These are just some DE-BRIEFING PROCEDURES you can build into your systems
- At all times, maintain a calm, reassuring and professional attitude with those involved in the incident
- Check that they have received medical assistance since the incident occurred and get advice, without delay, from a relevant person where an individual's behaviour and condition gives cause for concern
- Ensure the victim feels safe, reassured and comfortable to discuss the incident and the violence that took place
- Discuss the events of the incident in a sensitive and non-judgmental manner
- Record all relevant facts in order to aid and assist further investigations
- Ensure arrangements are being made for the individual to leave work and go somewhere they regard as safe
- Identify and agree arrangements suitable to the situation including :
- the time away from work
- the type of support to enable recovery and a return to work
- Record the discussions and agreed action accurately
- Follow-up with the individual and ensure that the arrangements for support whilst they are off work are put in motion
This is a large subject requiring tailor made solutions using techniques such as Critical Incident Debriefing.
Take care with debriefing it can be harmful. It should not be an automatic, uniform requirement. It should not be compulsory. Reliving the experience can result in secondary traumatisation. Research suggests group de-briefing can be very stressful
